How many years of gap is acceptable in Canada for study, this is one of the major concerns for every individual who is preparing to study in Canada and has a study gap. Before going into a deeper discussion, let's first understand what exactly is the study gap? In very simple words, a study gap refers to the time duration between your last completed academic qualification to the current date. One must take it into consideration that higher would be the study gap, more and more problematic it would be to get Canadian study permit or Canada student visa.

However, Canada is not that much stringent as Australia, US or European countries regarding study gaps, but still, it is advisable not to create considerable study gaps after completing your schooling or bachelor's studies if you are having plans to study in Canada. A gap of 2-3 months is no matter of worry, but if you are having some additional gap even if it is just 1 additional month, you must present a sound/legitimate explanation for it in your SOP (statement of purpose).

Providing that you have included adequate of documentary evidence with your admission application/visa application to justify your study gap, to the maximum, a study gap of 2 years after level 12th studies (for bachelor's/undergraduate studies) and 7 years after bachelor's (for postgraduate/master's degree courses) can be accepted by the Canadian institutions and Canada study permit application can easily be approved. However, beyond these limits, you might have chances for admission to a course at Canadian institutions but chances for approval of Canadian study permit application diminish with an increase in the study gap.

Legitimate Reasons That Can be Accepted for Study Gap:

  • the very first reason for the study gap is the preparation of certain entrance exams for admission to India's reputed colleges/institutions/universities i.e. JEE for undergraduate technology/engineering courses or NEET for undergraduate medical courses or GATE for master's degree courses in engineering/technology or CAT for MBA degree course
  • Another major reason for the study gap is preparation for government job exams (UPSC or SSC etc). 
  • Medical urgency can be one of the most common reasons for the study gap. 
  • Some students prepare and appear for improvement exams for improving their grades in previously completed academic qualifications. It also creates study gap.
  • Getting employed after completion of your level 12th studies or bachelor's degree can be a reason for study gap. 
  • Completing some general diploma or certificate course might be another reason for study gap. 

How to cover the gap for Canada study visa?

  • In case, you got employed after completing your level 12th studies or bachelor's degree, you can justify this gap by providing your employment-related documents i.e. joining letter/letter of offer from current and previous (if any) employer, experience letter from current and previous (if any) employer and salary slips or bank statement for your salary account for at least last 6 months. 
  • If you pursued short-term course to acquire skills in a particular area, you must furnish diploma or certificate for completion of the same. 
  • In case, you were preparing for some entrance exam or government job exam, you may provide fee receipts for the coaching you have taken for that specific exam (if applicable). Alongside it, provide roll number slip for the concerned exam to assure visa officer that you prepared for the exam and appeared for it. Additionally, you can provide score report for the exam as well. 
  • For medical-related reasons, you have to provide medical prescription receipts, medical exam reports and a written statement from the doctor who has done your treatment.
