SOP for Civil Engineering: MSc Civil Engineering course at University of East London
Being from a metro city, since my childhood I have seen massive buildings/structures getting built around our locality. And I always remained curious to find the explanation for a number of questions arising in my mind; how these huge structures or buildings are getting built, are these structures stable enough to live, and is it safe to live at the top floors of massive buildings. This curiosity grew with time and laid a foundation in my mind for the thought of pursuing my higher education in the field of civil engineering. At my post-secondary school level of studies (12 standard), I took mathematics, physics, and chemistry subjects, in order to get ready for my higher studies in the civil engineering field; building huge structures requires precise mathematical calculations and knowledge of basic principles of physics and chemistry. I pursued bachelor's level of studies (Bachelor of Engineering - Civil Engineering) from XXXX College and completed it in the year 20XX with XX.XX% of marks. Also, I have undergone six months of training at XXXX (mention company name) to acquire skills regarding practical usage of theoretical principles/concepts studied during my bachelor's degree. And now I have made up my mind to pursue a master's degree course in civil engineering so that I could enlarge my vision and acquire an advanced level of expertise regarding the field of civil engineering.
I have gone through all the possible options (colleges/courses at various destinations i.e. India, USA, UK, Australia and New Zealand etc.) for my higher studies and finally decided to pursue MSc civil engineering degree course at the University of East London in the UK. Being aware of Indian teaching methodology; entirely theory-oriented I preferred to go abroad for my higher studies. Another factor that pushed me to go abroad for higher studies is that I could get exposure of advanced/latest technologies i.e. drafting/designing software related to the civil engineering field.
Decision of choosing UK for my further education was based on various factors which I noticed while researching about my study options in abroad: counting the options available for pursuing a master's degree course in civil engineering, I realized that a range of globally renowned universities/institutions are available in the UK. Hardly any institution in USA, Australia or New Zealand is offering work-placement options as a part of the course as institutions in the UK are offering; providing an exceptional opportunity to gain adequate of practical working exposure in the field of study with reputed employers in the UK. Also, studying a master's degree course in civil engineering at most of the institutions/universities in the UK is comparatively lenient on the pockets of international students. Cities in the UK are placed among the world's best cities for living abroad; UK's cities offer one of the highest living standards in the world. UK's institutions offer funding support to international students in order to let them enable of pursuing their studies in the UK without much consideration about finance.
The University of East London is offering one of the best study options for pursuing a master's degree course in civil engineering; modern, well-equipped laboratories at the University of East London provide an opportunity to get exposure of the latest civil engineering tools/equipment and latest design and planning software. Academics (Dr. Ali Abbas, Dr. Ravindra Jayaratne etc.) at the University of East London teaching the modules of civil engineering course are academically expert as well as possess extensive industrial experiences in the civil engineering domain. Work placement option as a part of MSc Civil Engineering course would offer an opportunity to get employed with UK's major employers in the concerned field i.e. Atkins, Thames Water etc; offering an opportunity to get adequate of skills to handle latest industry tools/equipment related to the domain of civil engineering. Also, MSc Civil Engineering degree course at the University of East London is accredited by various professional bodies i.e. Institution of Structural Engineers, Institute of Highway Engineers etc. and so, it is confirmed that the curriculum offered for the course would be of the best quality, meeting the standards of professional education in the field of civil engineering.
However, I am pretty much determined towards my return to India after completing my studies at the University of East London. But also, I can put in efforts for getting post-study work visa for the UK after completing the specified course at the University of East London that would additionally provide me a year or more for lawfully working in the UK and enable me to further enhance my professional working profile. In combination, MSc Civil Engineering degree from the University of East London and international working experience would do a great job for me while making arrangements for employment with India's leading employers in the field of civil engineering i.e. IRCON International Limited, DLF Limited, RITES, TATA Projects Limited or Essar Group etc. For civil engineering professions (civil engineer, structural engineer, surveyor, site engineer etc.), a realistic amount of salary that could be expected in starting stages lies between INR 45,000 to 60,000 monthly. So, completing MSc Civil Engineering degree course at the University of East London would let me enable to debut my career as a civil engineering professional in my home country.
